Collagen and Microneedling: What is Collagen Induction Therapy?
Want to reduce the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin or hyperpigmentation?
Enter Collagen Induction Therapy!
What’s Collagen Induction Therapy, you ask? Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) describes the science behind microneedling and what it can do for your skin. Let’s explore the ‘how’ behind microneedling and learn why your skin will love collagen induction therapy.
How does Collagen Induction Therapy work?
Collagen Induction Therapy is based on the skin’s own ability to repair itself. Treating your skin with a microneedling pen will trigger your skin’s self-repair process by creating precise, micro traumas to the skin. This will trigger your skin to release growth factors and produce new collagen and elastin bonds, healing your skin and helping your skin to look fresher and younger.
What is a Dr. Pen Australia microneedling pen?
Dr. Pen Australia stocks a range of microneedling pens. A microneedling pen is a cosmetic, non-surgical microneedling device that is used to improve the appearance of your skin.
Microneedling using a microneedling pen is a non-invasive treatment that will improve the health of your skin by promoting your skin’s own healing process. Microneedling treatments target fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone, loose skin, enlarged pores, scars, stretch marks and hyperpigmentation.
With an effective, powerful motor and single-use sterile needle cartridges that gently treat the skin, you use a microneedling pen by moving the switched-on device in crisscross and circular motions across the face.
What are the benefits of microneedling and collagen?
The benefits of microneedling for your skin are profound - microneedling and collagen stimulation will result in your skin looking fresher, younger, bouncier and with a beautiful ‘glow’ from within.
Your skin will also experience a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, lessened hyperpigmentation, improved acne scars and stretch marks and an overall improvement in tone and texture.
You will also love the added benefit of product absorption. When microneedling, the thousands of tiny microchannels created in your skin allow for direct product penetration.
This means that your skincare products (such as serums and creams) will be better absorbed by your skin and have even greater benefits than if you were to apply the product atop your dry, untreated skin.
What areas of the face and body can I treat with collagen induction therapy?
Because Dr. Pen Australia microneedling pens have variable depths and needle speeds, this means that you can microneedle most areas on your face and body. The most common areas that you might like to treat with microneedling are your face, decolletage (neck and bust), tops of the hands, buttocks and thighs.
These areas are all prone to the visible signs of ageing so if you feel self-conscious about any of these areas, you may like to try collagen induction therapy.
Am I a good candidate for collagen induction therapy?
There are some contraindications with microneedling - as there are with any treatment - that you should take into consideration to decide if collagen induction therapy is right for you.
You may wish to approach microneedling with caution of you are susceptible to keloid scarring or raised scarring, if you have a history of eczema or psoriasis, if you have a history of Herpes Simplex infections, if you have diabetes or if you have persistent warts/moles.
If you have any of the following, you should not proceed with microneedling: treatment with Roaccutane (acne treatment), Sceleroderma, collagen vascular diseases, blood clotting problems (such as haemophilia), active bacterial or fungal infections (including Herpes Simplex), immuno-suppression, facial fillers (such as Juvaderm) in the last 6 months or Botox in the last 2 weeks.
How long does a microneedling treatment take?
A microneedling treatment will typically take you 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on how quickly you move. As you get more experienced, you may be able to complete the treatment faster.
A topical anaesthetic cream is recommended before microneedling, and this generally takes an additional 20-30 minutes to take effect.
How many microneedling treatments will I need and when will I see results from microneedling?
Everyone’s skin is different, so the number of treatments that you’ll require will vary depending on a number of factors including your skin’s history, your genetics, your current skincare routine and the severity of any skin concerns that you’re looking to treat.
As a very general guideline, 3-5 treatments performed every 6-8 weeks will give you great results. Microneedling can then be continued every 6-8 weeks to maintain your results.
Dramatic visible results are evident between 5-8 weeks after your microneedling treatment, however you’ll also see an immediate ‘glow’ just after treatment. You’ll soon become addicted to this beautiful glow!
One of the most exciting things about collagen induction therapy is that your results will continue to improve over the next 12 months as the new elastin and collagen settles in your skin and rejuvenates your complexion.
What is the downtime of collagen induction therapy?
Your skin will most likely be red and flushed (similar to a mild sunburn) immediately after treatment with a microneedling pen.
You may also experience some tightness and sensitivity to touch, which will reduce over the following few hours after your treatment and completely resolve by the next day.
You may experience slight redness for a few days post-treatment. Your skin is likely to feel a little dry and flaky for 3-5 days post treatment, which is due to the accelerated cellular turnover that microneedling triggers.
